Our aim is that these resources, rich in our language, history and tikanga, are made readily available to all Ngati Porou – to hear, feel, learn from and savour.

Ko Rongomaiawhio he tipuna no Ngati Porou, he tungane no Huturangi i moe ki a Paikea.

Rongo – ko nga rongo tenei o te tangata, a-taringa, a-ihu, a-aha ake ranei.

Awhio – ko nga mea enei e awhio, e taiawhio nei i a tatau. Ko te whainga matua o enei rauemi, he whakaora ano i nga taonga a ratau ma, ki a rangona i enei ra.

Rongomaiawhio is a tipuna of Ngati Porou, the brother of Huturangi who wed Paikea.

Rongo means to sense, hear, feel, and smell.  

 

Awhio is what is surrounding us, what is circling us. 

A Tatou Korero Hoki Ra

“A tatou korero hoki ra” – I kapohia ake te rerenga nei i te waiata tangi a Te Rangiuia mo Te Kani-a-Takirau. Ko nga korero i tukuna mai i runga i te ngakau whakaiti, hai awhina i te tangata ki te whakairo i te kupu.

These are the dirges and ditties of our ancestors. The beat has been synchronised with the words and video to make learning and singing along with them a lot easier. Brief explanations are provided to help to understand these treasures.

He Wiwi Naati

He titiro ki te iwi o Ngati Porou, ki te momo tangata e kiia nei, he Wiwi, he Naati, he Whanoke.  Ka tutaki tatou ki etahi o nga uri a Porourangi.  He reo reka, he puna korero, he tangata ka tarea te kite atu i nga ahuatanga o te Wiwi Naati i roto i ana korero, ona whakaaro mo nga take o te wa.

Toku Reo Toku Ohooho

He kaupapa whakaora i nga kupu me nga korero ake o te Wiwi Naati, te kopae e kiia nei ko “Toku Reo, Toku Ohooho”. Ka tarea e koe te whakarongo ki etahi o nga kiwaha me nga whakatauki ake o Ngati Porou, me pehea hoki te whakamahi i aua rerenga korero i a koe e korero ana. Ma te whakaari koe ka whakamarama i te tikanga o te kiwaha, whakatauki ranei, ka ako ano koe, me pehea te whakamahi i enei rerenga korero. He taonga korero tenei, na Te Reo Irirangi o Ngati Porou i hanga mo nga uri whakatipu.

He Pataka Korero

“He Pataka Korero” – He pataka iringa korero i waihotia mai e nga tipuna kua nunumi ki te po, kia rongo tonu nga reanga o naianei i te tuturutanga o te arero Nati.
